In 1860 Borthwick returned to Britain, where his paintings were exhibited in several galleries including the Royal Academy. Three years in California (1857) focuses on his experiences mining gold and quartz at Hangtown, Foster's Bar, Downieville, Mississippi Bar, Jacksonville, and Carson's Hill. He devotes much attention to social life in the camps as well as mining techniques, describing crime, the Chinese and French and other ethnic groups, and holidays and public entertainments. Borthwick illustrated the book with eight of his own lithographs which are considered the most realistic of the period for California. 20220526053918borthwick 1857 GB en California -- Social life and customs California -- Gold discoveries Law -- Political aspects -- California Ethnic groups -- California F850.5 Text 660117 2025-06-30T06:56:38.067522 text/html 636080 2025-06-08T10:48:56 text/html 3549824 2025-06-30T06:56:47.094485 application/epub+zip 3553630 2025-06-30T06:56:39.806554 application/epub+zip 340553 2025-06-30T06:56:38.768516 application/epub+zip 5777994 2025-06-30T06:56:52.806512 application/x-mobipocket-ebook 5709401 2025-06-30T06:56:45.834504 application/x-mobipocket-ebook 609934 2025-06-30T06:56:37.064574 text/plain; charset=us-ascii 589994 2025-06-08T10:48:56 text/plain; charset=us-ascii 15500 2025-06-30T06:56:52.959465 application/rdf+xml 28111 2025-06-30T06:56:38.893535 image/jpeg 4367 2025-06-30T06:56:38.830546 image/jpeg 3296543 2025-06-30T06:56:38.158540 application/octet-stream application/zip Archives containing the RDF files for *all* our books can be downloaded at https://book.klll.cc/wiki/Gutenberg:Feeds#The_Complete_Project_Gutenberg_Catalog en.wikipedia
